Developed a proof of concept in Power Bi for real-time analysis of booking and freight data, streamlining processes and enhancing revenue reporting
The project commenced with the goal of delivering a proof of concept that analyzed data from the client’s booking system for passenger vessels. The initial focus was on understanding booking patterns, which was later expanded to incorporate real-time data, offering insights into both booking-related income and freight-related revenue for trips to and from the islands.
A key objective was to enable real-time data access, eliminating the need for manual data entry and processes.
The proof of concept began by importing a dataset from Microsoft Excel into Power BI. I transformed the data and established necessary relationships to create a robust data model. As part of my role, I also worked closely with the client to identify patterns and inaccuracies within the data, enabling corrections at the source or during data entry. For example, we discovered inconsistencies in how users were entering data and identified which specific trips were either more cost-effective or less efficient. The primary objective at this stage was to develop a straightforward report displaying key metrics, including the number of bookings segmented by date, time, location, and vessel. Additionally, the report identified booking statuses such as paid, canceled, and missed, as well as the type of booking, whether it was for foot passengers, vehicles, or freight.
The final deliverable was a comprehensive Power BI report covering two of the client’s vessels, offering a detailed overview of all bookings and freight shipments. I set up a data gateway to link the dataset directly to the client’s live Business Central environment. This integration enabled the client to access real-time data, effectively removing the reliance on manual processes. By capturing income more swiftly and identifying inefficiencies, the client was able to manage costs more effectively and report revenue to authorities in a timely manner.
